October 23, 2008 is Canada’s second National Infectious Diseases Day.
On this day Canada’s 2000 infectious disease experts and practitioners ask Prime Minister Stephen
Harper and the Government of Canada to invest $200 million in a National Strategy to bolster the
capacity of the Canadian healthcare system to diagnose, prevent, control and treat known, new and
emerging infectious diseases in Canada’s hospitals.

A BATTLE WE CAN WIN: Reducing Healthcare Associated Infections by 50%
OTTAWA (September 22, 2008) – During this election campaign 1000 patients will die in Canadian hospitals of preventable Healthcare Associated Infections (HAIs).
Estimates are hospital infections kill 8,000-12,000 Canadians each year. Recovery for another 250,000 patients will be prolonged by treatment for HAIs. The cost to Canada’s healthcare system is more than $1Billion annually; personal cost to patients and their families immeasurable.

A National Infectious Diseases Strategy for Canadians
OTTAWA (October 16, 2007) – It is estimated that 1 in 7 Canadians
die of an infectious disease. Of these, up to 12,000 die from infections
acquired in healthcare settings such as hospitals and long-term care
facilities. More than ever infectious diseases are threatening the
health and lives of Canadians. For this reason, organizations representing
the infectious diseases sector are calling on the federal government
to lead a national infectious disease strategy. A position paper outlining
strategic requirements will be released to the public on Thursday,
October 18, 2007 on this website (www.nidd.ca).

Strategy
OTTAWA (October 12, 2007) – More than ever infectious diseases are
threatening the health and lives of Canadians. For this reason, organizations
representing the infectious diseases sector are calling for a national
infectious disease strategy to be led by the federal government. The
following organizations are collaborating on this initiative: Canadian
Foundation for Infectious Diseases (CFID); Association of Medical
Microbiology and Infectious Disease Canada (AMMI Canada); Community
and Hospital Infection Control Association- Canada (CHICA-Canada);
Canadian Association for Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases
(CACMID); International Centre for Infectious Diseases (ICID) and
private-sector industry partners working in the areas of infectious
